Owning houseplants can seem like an overwhelming hobby at first. There are so many varieties of plants, it can be hard to find the perfect plant to get started with plant care, so we’re here to help make this process a little easier for you. We've highlighted our top five picks for beginner-friendly houseplants.

Snake Plant

Snake plants are our first suggestion for the new plant parent. You can leave them alone for the most part because they tend to thrive when neglected! As long as you keep them in a bright area where they have at least some view of a window, they’ll be happy. Even better, they only need to be watered about once a month and have no extra humidity requirements. You won’t even have to worry about a snake plant outgrowing its pot any time soon because they’re generally slow growers. With around 70 different species of snake plant, there are so many options to find the perfect plant that speaks to you!

ZZ Plant

ZZ plants are such a difficult plant to kill, we often recommend them to parents with curious children who want to start their plant collection. ZZ plants need water once a month, which is usually about how long it takes for the soil to dry completely. They have a bulb and succulent-like leaves that help them store water for long periods of time. This makes them the perfect plant for beginners! They love bright indirect light and can even tolerate medium-low light.

Pothos

Pothos are a crowd favorite plant. They’re durability as a houseplant has even earned them the nickname “devil’s ivy.” They prefer you don’t wait a month to water them, but they are pretty forgiving of under watering. You should water your pothos once half the soil has dried. If you notice the leaves are starting to droop, give it a good soak and it will bounce back in a few hours. They can thrive in most light conditions—just know that the less light they have, the less growth you’ll see. They come in several different species all with ranging variegation.

Spider Plant

If you’re looking for a plant that grows quickly and can work indoors and outdoors, the spider plant is for you. They love to be moved to a shady porch in the warmer months, but will thrive just as well in your home. Spider plants require bright indirect light and are not tolerant of direct light. You can water them once half the soil has dried. During the growing season (spring and summer for most houseplants),your spider plant will produce little white flowers that will grow into little pups!

Umbrella Tree

Umbrella Trees are the perfect plant to purchase if you want to watch your plant grow from a baby in to a mature plant. You can even purchase dwarf umbrella trees that will not get as large. You can contain them to some degree by keeping them in the smallest pot possible without forcing the roots to be crowded. All umbrella trees need from you is a lot of bright light, water once half their soil has dried, and a little extra humidity. Don’t panic, all you have to do is purchase a small humidifier to keep your umbrella tree happy.
